Dr. Louis Davis Faver was a practicing physician andsurgeon in Wilkes County near Rayle, Georgia, where he lived allhis life on the Faver Plantation except for the years he servedin the Confederacy as a surgeon. He was listed on the earliestmuster roll of the Pettus Volunteers organized on March 4, 1862."This unit drew its numbers from Lincoln, Columbia, and WilkesCounties. The Pettus Volunteers, named for their first captain,Stephen G. Pettus, became Company E, Ninth Battalion, GeorgiaVolunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, the only Wilkes companyto serve in the western theatre of operations. On May 6, 1863,the outfit was transferred to the 37th Regiment Georgia InfantryCompany H." 1 Louis was excused from service in 1864 due to"disease of the heart." Dr. Louis Faver remodeled a largeten-room house with two large halls for his large family of sixchildren to live. Louis, age 41, died on April 23, 1873. Hisuntimely death might have been linked to the heart problemswhich excused him from service in the Confederate Army nineyears earlier. He was buried in the family cemetery with hisfather. Nine years later, his body was exhumed and moved tonearby Sardis Church Cemetery. Martha, a devoted mother andhomemaker, was left with six children to rear.
