      Author: Sharon Dean Lee
      Text:
      listening for Martha?s song

what of the South is in me
that terrible South of ragged souls
      how I fear the knowledge
      how I dread exposure

is my core a smothered place
      overrun by kudzu and KKK
      have separate fountains
      and George Wallaces
      disallowed
      disavowed
      disempowered
      me

      am I then a ghost
      a Daughter of the Confederacy
      just a fading Belle
      crazy Blanche
      or Steel Magnolia

can I ever know my grandmothers
can I ever tell their stories
      how do I begin

Wait! I know that voice that?s singing-

      Shh.
      Sit down beside me, daughter.
      Be still.
      I?ll smooth your hair.

      Oh, Martha-

      Text:
      Whispers

      In the flowering orchards
      my grandmothers
      weave hand in hand,
      white flutter in peach twilight,
      their memory
a gasp of history and rumor.

      I know their names:
      Honora, Martha,
      Winifred,
      Eliza,
      Lucy and Jane,
      Callie, Hiley,
      Georgeanne and Hattie.

      I'm here.

      They're dividing this acre,
      pulling up trees whose
naked roots lie drying in the sun.
      What happens to them
when the orchard too is a ghost?
